Portable medical device Scanadu Scout promotes the development of wireless personal medical devices

The portable medical device Scanadu Scout claims to obtain health parameters such as pulse, heartbeat, heart signal, body temperature, heartbeat change and blood oxygen saturation concentration within 10 seconds. It has been attracting attention since the beginning of this year. The US $ 100,000 fund-raising plan launched last year has raised more than 5 times more funds, which shows that the public has a strong interest in portable medical devices. Now, let ’s take a look at the internal design of this portable device.

The technologies used by Scanadu Scout are ready-made products that have been used in many medical designs. According to Kurzweil, Scanadu ’s director of health, science and integration MarTIn Zizi explained the composition and operation of this portable device. The hardware part contains a visible light and near infrared LED and sensors (to test parameters such as blood oxygen saturation), electrocardiogram (ECG) sensors, far infrared sensors for measuring temperature, and a microphone (to measure heartbeat and breath sounds).

Scanadu Scout uses the real-time operating system Micrium, which is also used by NASA for the SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) Martian matter analysis in the Mars Curiosity mission. Using data fusion, the algorithm contained on the microprocessor can calculate the pulse wave conduction time, blood pressure, heartbeat and breathing frequency, emotional pressure and degree, and other parameters. These data can be displayed on Android or iOS devices through Bluetooth 4.0 Smart Low Energy.

The operation method of Scanadu Scout is very simple, as long as it is placed on the forehead, it can detect a variety of vital signs. When there is no urgent need for medical treatment, this gadget can help users save a lot of medical expenses. Provide daily recorded health parameters to doctors for reference during diagnosis, reducing the probability of misdiagnosis. Alan Greene, chief medical officer of Scanadu, pointed out that according to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, about 150,000 patients will be misdiagnosed every year. Detailed consultation, and the patient's medical history information is often incomplete, so the health parameters recorded at any time will help doctors judge the condition and reduce the incidence of misdiagnosis.

In addition to the expected launch of Scout in the first quarter of 2014, the company also developed Scanaflo and Scanaflu. Scanaflo is a urine test kit that can be used to test urine glucose, protein, white blood cells, nitrate, blood, bilirubin, urobilinogen, specific gravity, pH level, in addition, it can also test for pregnancy -Many things that can only be done in a hospital or health examination center.

ScanaFlu allows users to detect whether they are infected with respiratory diseases by saliva, including group A streptococcal infection, influenza A, influenza B, adenovirus infection and respiratory cell fusion virus infection.

People can use Scanaflo to monitor the health index at home, and can give early warning when there is a problem with liver, kidney, urinary tract or metabolic function. These warnings may be useful for pregnant women, the elderly, diabetics, and people who are taking medications that may be at risk for physical function. The user does not have to worry about how to use it, because the application of the smart phone will guide the test procedure and explain the test results all the way, and save it. Scanadu pointed out that such equipment will be used as the first inspection measure for disease detection, bringing more convenience to millions of users.

The concepts of Scanadu's Scout and Scanaflo are not novel, and the technologies used are also ready-made. After combining with the smartphone app, the overall health care application constructed has shown such attractive characteristics. But the progress of wireless personal medical devices is a big step forward
