New substrate reduces LED chip area by 2/3 package time by half

On February 26th, TDK-EPC, an electronic component manufacturing and sales subsidiary of TDK Corporation of Japan, developed a "variable resistance substrate" capable of controlling the size of LED chips to about 2/3. The varistor is made of a ceramic material and has a capacitor function to prevent the LED components from being damaged when a high voltage is applied. Once the voltage is increased, the resistance changes, and when there is a large amount of current flowing on the ground side, it has the characteristic of avoiding short circuit.

   The varistor also has the function of removing static electricity, so there is no need to separately install diode components for solving static electricity on the substrate, and the area required for each LED component package can be controlled to 2/3 of the original. Increased packing density and higher brightness in the same area. Moreover, since the construction of the components becomes simple, the time taken to manufacture each chip is also halved.

   The variable resistance substrate has a higher heat transfer efficiency than an alumina substrate for general LEDs, and is expected to exhibit the function of absorbing heat energy. As the cooling effect increases, the brightness increases and is also associated with an increase in LED performance. Compared with the alumina substrate, this new substrate is considered to be costly, but emphasizes the effect of shortening the packaging time.

   TDK's variable-resistance substrate will mainly be used in high-brightness lighting or automotive headlamps. Currently, samples have been shipped to some customers such as LED package manufacturers. The small 2 square inch substrate is currently ready for mass production. Large 4 square inches of products will begin mass production in the fall of 2010. The sample price is set to 15,000 yen for the 2-inch model and 35,000 yen for the 4-inch model. Once the order is received, it will use the factory in Akita Prefecture to start mass production.
