Puri experiment uses new materials to manufacture LED substrates to significantly reduce costs

This announcement issued by Puri on April 5 will not only have a great impact on the LED manufacturing industry, but also greatly reduce the production cost of solid state technology. The California company said it has successfully used silicon wafers for the first time in commercial-grade LED assemblies.

Since the manufacture of LEDs requires the use of many relatively expensive material substrates, such as sapphire or silicon carbide, this has prompted many companies to allocate large amounts of research and development to find cheaper alternatives.

While most companies are trying to reduce costs by using a large number of substrates of the same material, Puri has shifted its focus to silicon, the core material of this computer chip.

In addition to the lower cost of using this material, this approach is theoretically applicable to existing semiconductor plants.

However, to be truly practical, the company has to face the fact that silicon is difficult to apply to LED applications. This process typically requires gallium nitride material deposited on the silicon wafer, with the result that the LEDs produced are less performant than LEDs made with conventional materials.

In the company's announcement, it has successfully used eight-inch silicon wafers to achieve 135 lumens per watt – meaning solid state technology will significantly reduce production costs in the future.

Bill Watkins, the CEO of Purui believes that the innovation of new technology will be unstoppable, using this new material can reduce the production cost of LED bulbs by 75% and make it sell for less than $5.

The company said it expects to produce the first commercial GaN products in the next two to three years.
