Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chip maker, and SK Hynix, a smaller company, accounted for 68% of the global dynamic random access memory (DRAM) market in the second quarter. The 2014 DRAM market is expected to grow by 36%.
According to market research firm DRAM exchange, the total market share of the two South Korean manufacturers in the second quarter increased by 3 percentage points from the previous quarter, far ahead of the 25.7% owned by US companies, and 6.3% by Taiwanese companies.
DRAMexchange said: "Korean manufacturers' DRAM global market share is close to 70%, and their influence should not be underestimated." Samsung's global market share in the second quarter was 39.1%, and SK Hynix's market share was 27.4%.
Micron Technology in the United States ranked third with 25.2%. Taiwan’s South Asia Technology, Winbond Electronics, and Powerchip Technology had 3.7%, 1.5%, and 1% market share, respectively.
