Apple has already revealed that it is very optimistic about AR technology. It is reported that Apple has obtained a patent, which is for the preparation of the subsequent AR project. What is not clear now is how this patent will be applied to Apple's AR project.
In this article, we will introduce a new patent related to augmented reality. More specifically, the present invention relates to a method and system for synthesizing an AR scene by embedding AR content within the image.
The US Patent and Trademark Office today announced 44 patents granted to Apple. The invention is part of Apple's acquisition of Flyby Media. One of the inventors of the patent was Oriel Bergig, who received his Ph.D. in Computer Vision and Augmented Reality from Ben Gurion University, Israel. With Apple's launch of ARKit and the original DeepDepth Camera, we know that this is one of the first patents they developed for the AR project.
Synthesized in a 3D AR scene based on the In-Place Augmented Reality method. As an additional sample image, it includes embedded AR content for assembly instructions, and this embedded content is presented in a 3D AR scenario according to the In-Place Augmented Reality method.
As part of the patent background, Apple discussed 4D barcodes and a software library ARToolKit (maintained by the Human Interface Technology Laboratory at the University of Washington) for building AR applications. They further introduced the use of these barcodes in the PlayStaTIon and Game Boy games.
The newly granted Apple patent number was 9,824,495, and Apple originally filed a patent application in the Q1 2010 quarter and was officially announced today by the US Patent and Trademark Office. Some research work can be traced back to 2008. It is not clear how this patent will be applied to Apple's AR project.
