Overview:
For more than 30 years, the basic 3-terminal regulator has been a fundamental building block in the designer's toolbox, and its basic architecture has not changed significantly. Using a fixed voltage reference, the resistor divider boosts the output voltage to the desired value. This type of regulator is very easy to use and therefore very popular, but this simple architecture has some inherent drawbacks.
One of the disadvantages of using a conventional linear regulator is that the minimum output voltage is limited by the regulator's reference voltage. Another disadvantage is that it is not easy to increase the available output current or dissipate power through parallel devices. In order to distribute the load across multiple regulators, or to add large ballast resistors, this can result in load regulation errors, or a complex circuit composed of input sense resistors and op amp loops to balance the load. This inevitably undermines the promise of using a seemingly simple linear regulator to achieve simplicity.
However, what happens if you remove the voltage reference and replace it with a precise current source? The resulting circuit is incredibly simple, as shown in the block diagram of Figure 1. An accurate current source is connected to the non-negative input of the amplifier, which drives a large NPN transfer component and then to the negative input of the amplifier to provide unity gain. Introducing this small change to a long-standing linear regulator device can have enormous benefits in terms of versatility and performance.
Figure 1: LT3083 block diagram Now, in this new architecture, to shunt the regulators, connect each SET pin together, which provides a common reference point for all error amplifiers, thus using only An ohmic ballast resistor balances any device-to-device offset. Suddenly, no matter how many devices are needed, it is very easy to dissipate power between devices. Similarly, the output current can be expanded as needed. The beauty of this architecture is that it provides a reference point for all regulators with just one resistor, regardless of whether one, ten or 100 regulators are used. In addition, the architecture allows zero resistance to be equal to zero output so that there is no longer a fixed reference voltage to limit the low end of the available output voltage range.
