Figure 1: PTC41 Timer/Controller
The PTC41 precision clock/timer, controller integrates the functionality of many dedicated meters into a versatile design. see picture 1. This versatile, economical, programmable timer/controller can perform a variety of tasks ranging from variable cycle timing in complex modes to basic stopwatch and reset operations.
The timing modes and patterns are almost limitless, and the four individually controlled outputs can be easily programmed via the front panel keys or the remote serial interface. When connecting to other DP41 Series test instruments with a common bus, the PTC41 timer/controller can request readings from all meters and record the data on a public printer.
special functionThe function of this precision instrument allows multiple timing modes to be realized through simple programming and process monitoring. There are four independent outputs, eight programmable setpoints, and five controlled output modes that enable a wide range of load control mode combinations. For commonly used timing sequences, the instrument can store up to 64 preset modes. The operation can be timed at intervals as short as 0.01 seconds or as long as 24 hours, and any cycle can be repeated as many as one million times. The meter can be configured to use any of the eight built-in time bases (such as calendar or one-hour resolution).
While the instrument is working, the user can view the settings and timing configuration at any time. Press the REVIEW button on the panel or activate the remote serial interface. This function will display the timing sequence without disturbing the timing function.
If the power is interrupted, the microprocessor-based non-volatile memory retains all settings of the timer. If you need to save the double calendar, there are spare batteries to choose from.
Simplified programmingThe PTC41 is fully programmable from the front panel and can also be programmed remotely via an RS-232 or RS-485 serial interface. Panel programming is achieved with five buttons. Key words on the six-digit alphanumeric LED display (such as START, TIMSET, UNITS, ELAPSE) inform the programmer.
There are more than forty instructions for remote programming options that can be fully controlled with a personal computer or workstation. Programming and timing status are fed back to the personal computer for program verification. The remote programming function configures self-instruction software.
Automatic data loggingThe PTC41 has a unique function in the controller mode. Using this meter as a timer/controller, up to 32 DP41 series instruments (such as voltmeters, temperature indicators, and batch controllers) equipped with an RS-485 serial interface board can be bus-connected. It can poll all instruments on the bus and request readings from all devices. Then an RS-485 printer, also on the bus, is instructed to record these readings, optionally with or without a time and date stamp. The PTC 41 can be programmed to monitor the remote device at intervals of up to 11 days. Figure 2 shows a typical configuration using PTC41 to connect three DP41 instruments and one printer.
Manage all time issuesThe meter's flexible timing and output load control provide the tools needed to manage all timing issues. Typical applications include life testing, burn-in, reliability assessment, process control, repeat cycle timing, and more.
Figure 2 Typical configuration of a PTC41 connected to three DP41 instruments and one printer.
Example 1: Time and control of intermittent burn-in, during which power is applied to the product for 10 seconds, then off for 50 seconds, the process cycled 10,000 times, and voltage readings were recorded every hour.
Example 2: Time and control of four simultaneous production processes, each requiring different start and stop sequencing, with one alarm indicating the key steps in each process.
Example 3: Control the switching period of a group of doors in a factory for safety reasons.
Example 4: Record readings from five unattended test instruments, record once daily, repeat this process for ten days.
Adaptable designSix 14-segment red or green LED displays operate at 100% and 50% brightness levels. Other indicators show alarm settings, AM/PM references, and timer status. The clock time base is derived from a 50 or 60Hz line frequency and an internal crystal oscillator with an accuracy of ±50 PPM over the entire operating temperature range of 0 to +60°C (+32 to +140°F). The AC power supply is 115V or 230V ± 10% and the maximum power consumption is 9W.
The UL-certified polycarbonate shell measures 48 (H) x 96 (W) x 149 (Thick) mm (1.89 x 3.78 x 5.86â€).
Universal instrumentThe PTC41 is a full-featured instrument capable of timing, controlling, and indicating data logging. The functions and features included in this economical instrument usually have to be integrated with a variety of different instruments. The PTC41 is available in panel mount and benchtop configurations and is an all-in-one solution for automated test, operation, and process control.
