According to foreign media reports, William Mark, head of SRI InternaTIonal's information and computing department, recently talked about his views on artificial intelligence and his next research super siri.
Recently, the World Ai Conference was held in San Francisco. More than 1,500 industry experts gathered to discuss the future of the artificial intelligence industry. One of the highlights was the presentation by William Mark, head of the Information and Computing Division at SRI InternaTIonal.
“We need to make artificial intelligence less artificial,†Dr. Mark said. He also emphasized that ai is far more than deep learning and machine intelligence.
This is very important. Because most of the participants are from the corporate sector, they focus on using ai to do things that humans can't do: large-scale parallel computing. Many speakers have cited such a data point: the IBM Watson supercomputer can read 4 million files in 15 seconds, which they use to show that we are moving in the direction of "singularity". (Singularity: It is the point in time when humans envisioned a revolution that transcends humanity and society.)
But Dr. Mark’s vision for ai is somewhat advanced. It is also very far-sighted and complicated in system design.
“We did a lot of work in developing the dialogue ai,†Dr. Mark said. “We did use deep learning for some systems, but the ai technology also includes intent recognition, natural language processing, and emotion detection.â€
"When managing instant talks, because people's conversations sometimes have a lot of content, when ai knows what to say next, we must teach ai to understand that people will express a new intention, but have not completed the previous one. For this problem, we are not using machine learning, but using clear rules and a series of reasoning mechanisms."
After receiving his Ph.D. in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mark began his role as an executive and researcher at National Semiconductor and Lockheed MarTIn Palo Alto Research Laboratories. After joining SRI in 1998, he began to focus on creating language and natural language, vision and perception, planning and reasoning new techniques.
After the birth of Siri in 2011 and the acquisition by Apple, Mark's team began to improve and optimize another dialogue ai platform, which is called Kai, used in the financial industry. Although it is now a separate company, Mark still serves as a director of the company.
Kai is a financial system based ai, which means that the Mark team must incorporate a trust mechanism into Kai's design.
"People can trust these ai, which will be a major factor in determining success. That's why I say that artificial intelligence is not so artificial." Mark continued, "because people's ideas are different, and artificial intelligence." Unlike people's way of thinking. For example, people like to think about causality, but most ai systems are considering relevance, which is determined by system design. So how to bridge the gap between these two ways of thinking is very important. One thing, this is also the frontier problem we are currently working on: developing a trusted system. Only in this way can ai be truly accepted."
Finally, he revealed to the attendees at the ai World Congress what he would do with the SRI team he led: he called it “super siri.†This research will be applied to solve the problem of population aging. .
“One of the things we are dealing with is the problem of an aging population,†Mark explains. “This is a huge cultural and economic issue. There are still many aspects. When people talk about aging, they always think of housekeeping robots. This is also the subject we are currently studying. In addition to this, we are still studying the companionship of aging. Many older people feel lonely, which leads to a decline in cognitive ability. The system we are studying is 'super siri' This problem will be solved to a certain extent. It can bring 'family' to the elderly and help them to recall memories of the past. And this system will be combined with the family sensor to monitor the activities and health problems of the elderly at any time. Finally it will also access the Internet of Things."
So, in Dr. Mark's view, the next big topic of artificial intelligence should be trust, which can use inference mechanisms to infer human intentions and predict what might be said next, what to do or what to expect. Maybe there will be such a scenario:
"How about a nap?"
"Good idea, siri, I think I will. Please wake me up after 20 minutes."
